The current flood in Assam has left many people stranded in different parts of the state. Around 54.50 lakh people have been reported to be affected by the devastating flood and over 100 people have lost their lives this year. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, seven people lost their lives in the last 24 hours (Thursday, June 23).
With no power supply and zero mobile network, many are locked inside their homes on account of the massive flood. On 21 June, Mizoram Police sent a rescue team in response to the distress call sent by the Young Mizo Association of Silchar. After the successful rescue mission, more than 30 Mizo students and workers have been brought to the Silchar Mission Compound.
Few days ago, a group of 20 Mizos were stuck in their rented building in Silchar. The Assam police and NDRF were not willing to take the risk to rescue these helpless occupants.
Before the arrival of the rescue team, the Young Mizo Association of Silchar had managed to rescue one of the occupants and much to their relief, Mizoram Police arrived on Tuesday night and immediately took measures to rescue the people. With the help of Silchar YMA, 12 of the remaining occupants have been safely rescued amidst the rising flood.
On account of the joint effort of Mizoram Police Rescue Team and Silchar YMA, 33 Mizos were safely brought back to the Silchar Mission Compound and 16 are currently on their way home to Mizoram.
