The Supreme Court collegium, consisting of three members, recommended 68 names out of the 113 candidates on the initial list for appointments as judges to 12 High Courts in the country. among the recommended names of judicial officers is Marli Hmangaihengi Vankung, who will be the first Mizo judge to be appointed as a judge of Gauhati High Court. Marli will also be the frist Mizo woman to hold the position in the High Court, if the Centre approves her candidature. 

 

Marli Hmangaihengi Vankung is the daughter of Brig. C. Vankunga and is currently residing in Republic Veng, Aizawl Mizoram with her family. Marli completed her LLB from Delhi University and received her MPhil degree from Jawahahrlal Nehru University, Delhi before joining the judicial services in Mizoram. She is currently the District Judge in Aizawl. Along with Marli Vankung, advocate K Sema is another candidate in the recommended list from the ST community. 

The Gauhati High Court has a working capacity of 20 as against a sanctioned strength of 24 and is currently functioning with four vacancies. Ina decision taken on September 1, 2021 the SC collegium has recommended the appointed of 3 lawyers and 2 judicial officers as judges. The recommended lawyers are Kakheto Sama, Devashis Baruah and Arun Dev Choudhury. Malasri Nandi and Marli Vankung are the two recommeded judicial officers.
