Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles seized 240 bags of Areca Nut worth Rs. 46,79,200/- in Melbuk- Champhai area yesterday. According to sources, the operation was a joint effort of the Assam Rifles and Customs Department of Champhai. The seized items have been taken into custody for further legal proceedings by the district authorities of Champhai.
The Assam Rifles have been carrying out successful campaigns against smuggling in the state, particularly along the border area of Mizoram and Myanmar. The drug trade and smuggling have become serious concern in the region and many supplies, loads and products have been seized in the past by the Assam Rifles and local authorities.
